ENGINEERING STUDENTS OPINIONS

Picture of nicoleI just finished my second year in civil engineering and have a 3.8 average out of 4. As you can see I am on my University Dance team. With practices and performances at games my study time is pretty limited. Using DON'T PANIC I got A's in both semesters of freshman physics and had a great foundation for my second year engineering classes.

Secret Weapon

Our assigned text was a horrible, expensive book with beautiful pictures and lots of stuff that did not help me understand the equations and was of no real help. Someone gave me DON'T PANIC and I never opened the other book again. My first test was 105 out of 100! I was the only one to get the bonus. I am ashamed to say I did not tell anyone in the class about DON'T PANIC. Now that I'm through with physics I don't mind letting people in on the secret.

Studied on His Own

My Dad gave me both DON'T PANIC books when I started my senior year in high school. We didn't have AP courses so I studied independently and placed out of Physics I and II when I started college. Being able to email the author when I needed help was awesome.

No Reason to Panic

I'm a graduating senior in Mechanical Engineering. I learned my physics from DON'T PANIC and it is definitely the most influential book that I have used in college. Mastering the concepts in DON'T PANIC has taken me into my senior year of ME, which is a lot more than I can say about my other textbooks. Although the book is challenging it helps the student master concepts that are often not even covered in other books. I believe that all aspiring engineering students should get this book and do the hard work necessary to learn physics. Just the chapter on polar coordinates and rotations got me an A on the first test in a junior course in Dynamics.

A High School Student

My teacher used "DON'T PANIC - Mechanics" for his lectures and for homework problems. I got a 5 on the AP Exam. Too bad he did not have the second book on Electricity and Magnetism or I could have gotten a 5 on that stuff as well.

Another Graduating Senior

When I took physics, DON'T PANIC was not the required textbook and I failed the course. I took it again and somehow got a C, without feeling I had learned much more. When I started the second physics course someone told me about DON'T PANIC and I got it and read every word and worked every problem, even though it was not the text chosen by the professor. I got a high A in that course plus the confidence to tackle whatever my engineering courses threw at me. I graduate this June. I am really grateful.

DONT BE ONE OF THOSE STOPPED BY PHYSICS

Get this book and study hard. You can email questions to the author if you get stuck and get help from one of the country's finest physics teachers.

Some teachers think the answer is to water down the freshmen physics courses. Then students are not prepared and they flunk out a year later.

The country needs engineers. Let us help you over this hurdle.

Have a look at Chapter I on Essentials of Calculus. Even if you don't order the book you might find this helpful. Click here

About the Author

Professor Bassichis received his undergraduate degree in physics at MIT. He received his Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics at Case Institute of Technology where he first taught physics to engineering students. He had post-doctoral positions at the Weizmann Institute for Science in Israel and at the Center for Nuclear Studies in Saclay, France. He returned to MIT where he was an Assistant Professor of Physics, again teaching aspiring engineers. He joined the faculty at Texas A&M University where he was the first professor chosen from over one thousand faculty given the new rank of Presidential Professor for Teaching Excellence. (Only two such lifetime appointments are made each year.)

He has received three other teaching awards as well as being voted the Favorite Teacher" at the Texas A&M - Qatar Campus where the initial class had to take the first two semesters of freshmen physics in just four months! (Over 90% of those students passed with a C or better.) He has been a Principal Investigator on two federally funded, five year investigations aimed at improving the quality of engineering graduates, while increasing retention.
